Pisa
Back To Florence
This
former maritime republic is most famous for its Leaning Tower, which rises
precariously from the huge jade-green Field of Miracles. It started leaning
almost from the day it was built in 1173. The tilt is now about 5 metres from
the vertical, but recently the tilting has been arrested and the tower has been
re-opened to the public.
Alongside
the tower stand three other spectacular buildings, t
he Duomo famous for its
pulpit by Giovanni Pisano, the Baptistry which also contains an equally fine
pulpit, and the Camposanto Cemetery, look out for the frescoes illustrating 'The
Triumph of Death'.
