Verona
and Lakes
With
canals for streets, Venice is one of the few cities in the world which is truly
unique. It is the perfect way to get around is walking losing yourself in its
labyrinth of alleys and canals.
Its focal point is the
Piazza San Marco, the site of St. Mark's Basilica, pictured below, and its
famous Campanile (bell tower). Other highlights include the Doge's Palace, the
seat of power in Venice for over a thousand years, and the Bridge of Sighs, also
pictured below.
To
reach the islands of Venice Lagoon, it is best either to take a vaporetti
(waterbus) from Piazzale Roma, or take an organised trip. There are tree main
islands that are visited, these are, firstly, Buran
o,
famous for its lace making, Murano, famous for its glass making, and
finally, Torcello, which is rustic and peaceful and the home of
Venice's first cathedral, (Santa Maria Assunta) famous for its mosaics.
