The Sorrentine
Peninsula
Why not try a trip to
Naples or
Capri or
Pompeii or
Herculaneum
Sorrento
itself is popular with tourists, especially British tourists, because the town
is an attractive and unpretentious place, perfectly placed for excursions to
Pompeii and Herculaneum by the local train, and for trips to Amalfi, Positano
and Ravello on the Peninsula and Capri and Ischia out in the Bay of Naples. The
great pleasure of Sorrento are its lush, shady gardens and its views. There are
few sights to equal a Sorrento sunset!
An excursion from Sorrento,
called the Amalfi Drive, takes you along the most breathtaking of any road in
Europe around the coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula past Positano to Amalfi
itself.
Amalfi is the largest town
on this coastline, it can sometimes get very congeste
d with tourists. Poised
romantically between the mountains and the sea, the town's narrow
streets and dark passageways weave among monuments like the Duomo. This
dominates the central square from the top of a large flight of steps as shown in
the photograph.
